The Golden Horn and Spice Bazaar
Istanbul and Turkey are emerging as Western, Islamic, and secular societies. Strategically located at the intersection of Europe and Asia, and at the center of world trade routes over land and sea, Istanbul expresses historic cultural influences in its layering and form. The evolution of the city and its urban design and architecture embrace the diversity of its people, cultures, and civilizations.
The studio addresses the role of cultural influences in the evolution of the city and its form and urban design, including the political and religious influences that Islamic, Byzantine, Christian, Orthodox, Greek, Ottoman, Armenian, and Jewish groups brought to the city in its history, as well as the contemporary intersection of Islamic tradition and secularization.
This project will contribute to the understanding of a significant “world city” in a critical geopolitical region, and of urban design in cities globally. The cities of Bursa in Turkey and Damascus and Aleppo in Syria will be studied.
Istanbul Project - The Golden Horn and Spice Bazaar
The studio focus will be the historic and original city area, located at the meeting of the Bosphorus River and the Golden Horn - at the Galata Bridge and the major square surrounded by the Golden Horn ferry docks, the central Spice Market, and two major mosques. This site includes the backdrop of the Hagia Sophia, Suleymaniye Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar.
The project phases include research and documentation of urban design with focus on the methodology of analysis for cities, urban design proposals of “urban modification” in the central area of the Spice Bazaar and Golden Horn, and architectural design projects for a civic center at the Spice Bazaar with a ferry transportation center.
