Of major importance for architects and urban designers is the search for meaning and involvement in the present global human crisis of destruction in Syrian cities and the resulting impact of the loss of human settlements for displaced inhabitants and refugees. The studio focuses on the “World Heritage” city of Aleppo, Syria, a city of present tragedy and hope for rebuilding. Aleppo is one of the oldest “world cities” and a city of great importance for the history of civilizations and human culture. The studio includes designs for the city as memory, symbolic identity, and rebirth, along with designs for re-settlement projects for refugees and their communities.
Studio Focus and Design Narrative:
Aleppo’s Historic “Heart” -- Citadel, Souk and Khans, Mosque Courtyard, Residential Courtyard, and Water and Open Spaces
Aleppo Revealed -- The city intact and The city destroyed
Aleppo -- City documentation
The People -- Places in the Journey of Refugees
Designs for Settlements of Refugees
Return to Aleppo -- Designs for Rebuilding and the Memory of the City
The Aleppo Studio is organized around a narrative of sequential phases. Students worked on designs and drawings for all phases. For the last two phases – the design for the refugees and design for the rebuilding of Aleppo, each student worked in parallel for these phases -- for a combined greater narrative of the people of Aleppo.
For their designs for refugee journey sites, students worked with refugee camps, or over-sea arrival in Greece, or re-settlement in European cities. For their designs in rebuilding Aleppo, students worked on sites at the citadel, souk or khans in the historical heart. The purpose of their projects included housing or temporary housing, education, and commerce in rebuilding the citadel and souk, and designs for the preservation of the archeology and memory of the pre-war city.
